Neighbor

a small, invite-only project helping people who are isolated, tired, or just starting out rebuild real community, online and in person.

We used to know the people two doors down. Not because anyone was especially good at being neighborly — just because ordinary life kept putting us in the same place. That’s gotten harder for basically everyone, and it’s not a personal failing.

This is a small, deliberate attempt to build some of that back.

Community is a shared commitment to each other’s humanity, to collective joy, and to the ongoing work of care.

 

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers—so many caring people in this world.

what’s the difference between a helper and a neighbor?

Neighbors used to borrow sugar, sit on porches, and notice when someone hadn’t been seen in a while.  Modern, post-pandemic life has made being neighbors harder.  Helpers are the ones, like you, who dig in and take on the unglamorous, deliberate, slow work of showing up consistently for others to remind them of how to be a neighbor again.

first, Be a helper

Show up consistently for people you don’t know well.  Share in a little collective joy or build a relationship in a trusted space.  All of this can happen even before you share your personal information.

then, become neighbors

Neighbors are relationships created with time, proximity, and many small repeated, meaningful moments.  Eventually, you’ll develop the kind of trust with someone you’ll want to share joy with or who you’d call when there’s an emergency.

come as you are

There’s no right door and no rush to pick one. Most people start with whatever feels the least scary and drift toward the others later, if they ever do at all — nothing here requires the rest.
